ITALY Rest of Italy |
A Jacobite Gazetteer - ItalyFrom 1717 until 1859 the Jacobite kings and their families lived in Italy. King James III and VIII first came to Italy in 1717. He and his sons, King Charles III and King Henry IX and I, lived the vast majority of their lives in that country. At the death of Henry IX and I in 1807, his British rights passed first to the House of Savoy who ruled the Kingdom of Sardinia, and then to the house of Austria-Este who ruled the Duchy of Modena. In 1859 King Francis I (Duke Francis V of Modena) withdrew from Modena which was incorporated into the new Kingdom of Italy. Even after the Royal Family ceased to live in Italy, they continued to visit. King Rupert and Queen Antonia spent several vacations in Italy before the Second World War, and from 1939 to 1945 they lived in Italy with their children.
