Regnal numbers:

Separate regnal numbers are used for the Stuart kings and their Jacobite heirs and successors in respect to their separate kingdoms of England and Scotland. James II and VII was the second king of England of that name and the seventh king of Scotland of that name. His grandson Charles III was the third king of both England and Scotland of that name (which does not make him Charles III and III) Scotland had never had a king by the name of Henry until 1788; so Henry IX of England was Henry I of Scotland.

Since at least the mid-nineteenth century most English Jacobites have been fervently legitimist. The majority recognise Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, as Mary II of England (Mary Tudor having been Mary I of England); therefore Maria Beatrice di Savoia would be Mary III of England and II of Scotland. Those Jacobites who do not recognise Mary Stuart as Queen of England, call Mary III and II, Mary II. Similarly while most Jacobites call Marie Therese von Habsburg, Mary IV and III, there are a few who call her just Mary III. Robert I of England and IV of Scotland is the proper style, but almost always the Jacobites call him Rupert.
