Bamberg - Neue Residenz

Facade
Facade

The city of Bamberg is located 200 kilometres north of Munich.

Rupert, Duke of Cornwall and Rothesay (later King Rupert) and his first wife, Marie Gabrielle, lived here for most of the first two years of their marriage. Rupert was assigned as commander of the 7th Infantry Brigade.

Rupert and Marie Gabrielle arrived in the city October 26, 1900. They lived in the Neue Residenz which had been built by the prince-bishops of Bamberg. Rupert lived on the first floor in the Prince-Bishop's Apartment (Fürstbischöfliche Wohnräume). 1 Marie Gabrielle lived on the second floor in the Imperial Apartment (Kaiser-Appartement); it was here that her eldest son Prince Luitpold was born May 8, 1901. 2 Prince Luitpold was baptised in the Thronsaal (which I presume is the same as the Kaisersaal). Rupert and his family remained in Bamberg until the summer of 1902.

A number of rooms of both the Prince-Bishop's Apartment and the Imperial Apartment are open to the public. In the Venetian Cabinet (Venetianisches Kabinett) of the Imperial Apartment one can see Prince Luitpold's crib made of mahogany and gilt-bronze; it was created by the Regensburg furniture maker H. Kaiser. 3

The Neue Residenz is open April - September, Tuesday to Sunday from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m., and October - March, Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.; entrance € 4,00.
