The Family of the Dukes of BerwickThe Duke of Berwick and his family are the only surviving male-line descendants of King James II and VII. They descend from King James' illegitimate son by Arabella Churchill, James Fitz James. Since he was illegitimate, James Fitz James (and his descendants) had no rights to the English and Scottish thrones. In 1687, however, King James raised his son to the peerage of England with the titles Baron of Bosworth, Earl of Tinmouth, and Duke of Berwick. The 1st Duke of Berwick married twice. His son by his first marriage, the 2nd Duke of Berwick established himself in Spain where most of his descendants live today. His sons by his second marriage established themselves in France (for whom see this page). At the death of the 10th Duke of Berwick the English title was inherited by his nephew. The only daughter of the 10th Duke of Berwick succeeded him in his Spanish titles, amongst which is the the title Duquesa de Berwick. All of the legitimate descendants of the 9th Duke of Berwick are listed below. I acknowledge with gratitude the assistance provided to me by various members of the family of the Duke of Berwick, and invite further additions and corrections.
