The Descendants of Little Elihu Sallis
of Littleport, Cambridgeshire
The Sallis family have lived in Littleport and the surrounding area for over 350 years.

Little Elihu Sallis was born in Littleport in 1850. He was one of the eleven children of John Sallis, a farm bailiff, and his wife Sarah Riches. The family lived in Littlport until at least 1856, but by 1861 they were in the neighbouring village of Downham. By 1871 the family had moved to the south side of the city of Cambridge.
In 1872 Little married Janet Maria Houghton, the daughter of an Ely shoemaker. On his marriage certificate Little's occupation is given as groom. The family continued to move around. In 1875 and 1876 they were living in Feltwell, Norfolk. In 1878 they were living in Cockthorpe, Norfolk. By 1881 they were back in Littleport, but in 1883 they were living in Ely. In 1885 they were in Haddenham. In 1889 and 1891 they were back in Ely. In 1893 and 1901 they were living in Wilburton. Little is usually identified as a groom (or coachman) and gardener. The reason for the family's frequent moves is not known.
Between 1909 and 1911 Little, his wife Janet, and eight of their ten children made an even bigger move - they emigrated to Canada. The first to move was Little and Janet's third eldest daughter Eliza (aged 20). In October 1909 she sailed from Liverpool on the RMS Empress of Ireland, a ship that five years later would sink with the loss of over a thousand lives. Eliza, however, was more fortunate and landed safely in Quebec City, and then went on to Vancouver (presumably by train); on her immigration papers it says that she was going "to friends", but it is not known to whom.
Seven months later Little and Janet (then in their mid-fifties) followed Eliza to Vancouver. They travelled on the SS Laurentic which sank during World War I. Little and Janet were accompanied by their unmarried daughters Ursula (aged 25) and Hilda (aged 17). On board the same ship was Little and Janet's eldest daughter Agnes Dickerson (a widow, aged 34) with three of her children. They were intending to settle in Winnipeg, but instead they went on to Calgary (eventually Agnes moved to Vancouver).
In March 1911 Little and Janet's unmarried daughter Barbara (aged 28) came to Vancouver; she accompanied four of the children of her sister Agnes who joined their mother in Calgary. Then in May 1911 Little and Janet's daughter Janet (aged 30) emigrated with her husband Johnathan Reader and their three children. Two weeks later they were followed by Little and Janet's daughter Georgina (aged 21) accompanied by her husband Robert Stapley. The last to come to Canada was the eldest daughter Elizabeth (aged 38) in December 1911.
Little and Janet's two sons, George (married in 1902) and Horace (married in December 1911), remained in England. George was my great-grandfather (more information here).
Little and Janet lived in Vancouver until moving north to Hazelton to live with their daughter Hilda. Hazelton is located about 500 km north of Vancouver (although the trip by road is over 1200 km). At some point before 1922, Little returned to Vancouver (perhaps for health reasons) and lived with his daughter Agnes. Little died in Vancouver in 1923 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery. Janet died in Hazelton in 1925.
Of the eight daughters who came to Canada, one (Elizabeth) returned to England and eventually married late in life. Four daughters (Agnes, Janet, Georgina, Hilda) remained in Canada; all four have descendants in Canada, and one also has descendants in England. Three daughters (Eliza, Barbara, Ursula) moved to the United States where at least two of them had children. The two sons (George, Horace) both had children in England; some of their descendants remain in England, although others have emigrated to Canada or Australia.
